Weekly Reader
Introducing a new section to the Newsletter, Weekly Reader!  Look to this section of the newsletter for the links to the latest content on the topic of learning.  We are excited to bring this feature to the Raw Learning community, as we know many of you enjoy a life of continual learning and the acquisition of new knowledge.

Classes and Volunteering
Share your talents and love of learning at Raw Learning. Come teach a class and/or volunteer this Fall. Please let Gleamer know how you would like to participate by August 12th so that we can post a class schedule and set our volunteer time slots.

Field Trips
Where would you and yours like to go this Fall?  A hike to view Black Bears and a trip to Boxerwood are two suggestions. Please email Gleamer with your ideas.

Raw Learning is the place for Summer Fun!
Join us on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:30 AM and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 -5:30 PM for free information and play sessions at Raw Learning.
The dates when the sessions will be available are Tuesday, July 25th through Thursday, August 12th and on Tuesday, August 31st and Thursday, September 2nd.
Please come to as many sessions as you can to learn about the Raw Learning community and to keep us in touch through the summer months.
Location Raw Learning is located in the rear of the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, facing N. Coalter St (the address is 2807 N. Augusta St., which is where the front of the church is). At the rear of the church there is a playground. Come into the playground and through the door that is in the far right corner. Please call me at 540.292.3002 if you would like further directions or can't find us.

What an amazing end to an amazing year. We did it! The Raw Learning community is a year old and going strong. We are excited to beginning our next trimester on September 7th. Thank you to each and every person who is part of the community. We look forward to seeing you sometime soon.

ATTENTION: If you are unable to go on this field trip let Gleamer know immediately. There are 5 people who would like to buy your tickets.

2:00PM-The folks with 4 hour passes can begin ending their splashing. All-day pass holders are welcome to stay until 10PM!

Camping Field Trip- Friday, June 11th ->Sunday, June 13–Westmoreland State Park: Montross, VA
*Only families preregistered may attend with Raw Learning.  Fall Trimester field trips will be available to register for in August.
Friday, June 11
8:30AM-Leave for Westmoreland Berry Farm. The address is 1235 Berry Farm Lane, Oak Grove, VA 22443. Please let Gleamer know if you would like to follow her there.
Around 11:30AM-Arrive . Enjoy the goats cross the sky. Pick some berries. Have some lunch.
Around 12:30PM-Leave the Berry Farm.
Around 1:30PM-Arrive at Westmoreland State Park. The address is 1650 State Park Road, Montross, VA 22520. We are in the Buddy Site in Campground B, booked and prepaid under Sullivan. Here is a link to the Park map. We’ll set up our tents and get situated. Explore. Possible team building games and other activities.
Around 6PM-Dinnertime! Bring something to share, if you would like.
8:30PM-Welcome Campfire at the Visitor’s Center with complementary S’mores.
Saturday, June 12
8:30AM-Leave camp for the kayaking trip
**Book your Fossils and Fun kayaking trip now as spaces frequently fill up. The cost is $19 for a solo kayak and $25 for a tandem kayak. Call 804.493.8821

Around Noon-Lunch
There are different events such as hikes (cost $3/person, $8/family) and shark tooth necklace making ($4/necklace) available on Saturday and Sunday. These events can be accessed after Monday, June 7th by calling 804.493.8821 before 5PM.
Around 6PM-Dinnertime! Bring something to share, if you would like.
Sunday, June 13
Scavenger hunt and other games and activities will be available. Swimming might be fun during this time too.

There is one 20’ X 20’ tent pad left at the Raw Learning Buddy Site for the Westmoreland camping trip. We will arrive on June 11th and leave on June 13th. You can come for one night or two. Each night costs $25. There is so much to do there including kayaking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, hiking PLUS Raw Learning activities such as campfire bread baking and team games. A stop at the Westmoreland Berry Farm to get some treats and see the goat walk will be lots of fun too. Contact Gleamer immediately if you are interested.

Homeschool BBQ
What a fantastic turn out! Over 40 people came to play, eat and chat. The water was great on the hot day and the new sandbox was well loved.  The Raw Learning community is really wonderful. We missed all of you who couldn’t come.

Field Trip- Tuesday, June 1st –Deauville Fallow Dear Farm: Bayse
*Only families preregistered may attend with Raw Learning.  Fall Trimester field trips will be available to register for in August.
8:55AM-Raw Learning will be leaving from the University Outpost Bookstore at I-81’s Exit 245.
9:40AM-Arrive Deauville Fallow Dear Farm. The address is 7648 Crooked Run Road
Basye, VA 22810.  Here are directions from the University Outpost Bookstore. Please print directions out even if you plan on following us from the Bookstore.
Be sure to check the weather forecast and bring sunscreen and/or rain gear and a picnic lunch.
11:30AM- Leave The Deer Farm to go to Shenandoah Bowling Lanes. Their address is 5904 Main St., Mt. Jackson, VA 22842
12:00PM-Arrive Shenandoah Bowling Lanes.
Small people will need to bring socks. The smallest size shoe available is a women’s 5 and men’s 4.
1:30-2:00-Leave Shenandoah Bowling Lanes.
2:00-2:30-Arrive Harrisonburg. Depending on the weather we’ll spend the rest of the day at the Dream Come True Playground on Neff Avenue or at the Harrisonburg Children’s Museum.

WVPT Kid’s Book Festival
Raw Learning will participate in the Festival on June 5th from 11:00 to 3:00 at JMU’s Memorial Hall (formerly Harrisonburg High School). We’ll have parachutes to color, assemble and launch at our table. There are books for everyone under 10 and tons of free stuff. We hope to see you there!
Please let Gleamer know if you will help at the Raw Learning table from 11:00-12:00.

**Field Trip- Tuesday, May 18th –Fastrax: Waynesboro
*Only families preregistered may attend with Raw Learning.  Fall Trimester field trips will be available to register for in August.
9:30AM- Raw Learning volunteers and students will leave Staunton and head to Fastrax, which is located directly off of I-64 at Exit 94.  Their address is 1110 Red Top Orchard Road, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
10:00AM-Arrive Fastrax.
12:00PM-Leave Fastrax. If the weather is tolerable, we’ll go to Ridgeview Park to picnic and play.
**The go-carts will be available even if it’s raining. Please dress accordingly and bring an extra change of clothes, if need be.

8:40AM- Raw Learning volunteers and students will leave Staunton to go to the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market. You are welcome to join us! You can find directions here.
9:55AM-Arrive EMU Hostetter Museum. The address is 1150 Park Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22802. Look for the white domed building.
10:00AM-Begin exploring!
11:30AM-Leave The Museum. If the weather is good, we’ll go to Purcell Park to picnic.

Field Trip- WEDNESDAY, May 5th – Quiet Acres Farm: Grottoes
*Only families preregistered may attend with Raw Learning.  Fall Trimester field trips will be available to register for in August.
9:00AM-Arrive Quiet Acres Farm. The address is 45 Mt. Horeb Road, Grottoes VA, 24441 Directions: Off of I-81 at Exit 235, go 4.3 miles to Rockfish Road. Take a right onto Rockfish Road. Go 1 mile. At the fork, go right onto Battlefield towards New Hope. Go 1 mile to Mt. Horeb Road on Left. Quiet Acres is the first house on the right. It’s a brown house with green metal roof. There is the #45 on the mailbox.

Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport: Weyers Cave
*We had nearly 70 people sign up for the field trips on May 5th. Dan and Sylvia at Quiet Acres welcome all 70. The folks at the Airport can only accommodate half. If you are signed up to attend, please check the Newsletter attached to the email to determine whether you can come on May 5th or will need to wait until May 12th.
11:15AM-Picnic at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport. If it’s too hot, there is a place to eat inside the airport.
12:00PM-Begin airport tour.
1-1:30-Airport tour ends.
 
On Monday, May 3rd Rebecca Allison, who is a Certified Consultant of Brain Gym and Richards Institute representative, will be holding class from 10:30-11:30.  We’re hoping that she’ll continue to come and lead us in movement and sound.
